I thought this might be a good way to start off this topic...

I think the clips sold here will probably be used in many lower budget documentaries. So I think watching quality documentaries might give us ideas of what producers are looking for in our clips.

Does anyone have any good documentaries they might recommend? Shall we start a list?

Great idea... I'm trying to think of some documentaries, but I can only think of documentaries in which they don't use stockvideo

what about a documentary about the online stock footage market, surley that's got to be full of stock footage ?

Not really a documentary, but I'd like to recommend a movie called "Koyaanisqatsi". It's what got me into this business. It's a treasure chest full of ideas for every stock footage producer.

Good suggestion, but in can easily lead to Na-qoy-qatsi: (nah koy' kahtsee) 'A life of killing each other' as already noticed in some of the forum entries where criticism is used more likely for putting-down than putting-in (as in input, positive and/or negative). Nobody is perfect and some 'productions' might have just that tad of imperfection that might make it 'perfect' for a certain customer. Use of stock footage has an aura of using 'cheap stuff' and that for sure only is true when it comes to the exchange of money, not the realization of ideas and creativity. I find a lot clips here that 'I would never buy' that does not make them less 'good' or 'valuable' for others. I am in the CG & media market for over 20 years and I know, that nothing is predictable. A certain quality is required but that is guaranteed by the submission process, the rest is as always: 50% creativity, 43% sweat, and 7% taxes. ;)

What would you think of an entire feature film made from stock footage? Let's say 90 minutes, that is about 180 footage clips of 30''. In HD, that would cost 5400 USD, in SD that would be 2700 USD. I considered 30'' HD would cost 30 USD, and 30'' SD would cost 15 USD. So, roughly, a feature film would be up to 10,000 USD in HD or up to 5000 USD in SD. I think it is worth to give it a try. What you think of it?

lol, I think most directors have their own artistic vision, and they only try to use stock footage when they necessarily have to. : )

And unlike Bestmoose, I haven't been in media for 20 years, but in my personal experience show business is highly competitive, and just like any other business you can use marketing research to predict what people want to buy. Its like predicting the weather, its not always right but you can come close.

Great idea, you are welcome to purchase one each of all my clips here at P5 to get the documentary started. I think that would give you a great start to show all of us ;)

Hey guys , I registered at p5 less than 2 week. its my first post here . I do documenteries in the philippines, I also shoot for others from deffrent part of the world. I am stuck with lots of footage from Asia. I will be a good idea to upload all of them . Thank guys for idea and Thanks to P5.
