a snapshot of the earth-moon system around 4 billion years ago. the earth had only just finished forming when a rogue protoplanet, three times the mass of mars, slammed into it. the debris from the impact went into orbit to form a glowing ring of molten rock. much of this material fell back to earth, but a lot of it gathered together in orbit, forming our moon. formation of the moon, computer artwork.
