BONITO, MATO GROSSO DO SUL, BRAZIL: August 19th, 2008. Eva (Slovakia, right) and Rita (Scotland, left) celebrate the upcoming of the spring to Brazil by applying the bright red spiny achiote fruit juice. The fruits contain small red seeds which, when crushed, produce the bright red-orange dye, containing a carotenoid pigment. The red paste may be applied around the ankles as a tick repellant. But the predominant use of the plant is as a dye for cloth, hair, and skin, and — often under the name annatto — as a virtually tasteless food colorant.
