Invades wet pasture, gullies, irrigation ditches, rubbish dumps, waterlogged areas, marshes, swamps, creeks, dry coastal & riparian vegetation, temporary & permanent freshwater wetlands, warm temperate rainforest & grasslands. In WA, also occurs in pine plantations, coastal shrublands, Karri forest, Melaleuca & Eucalyptus woodlands, Juncus sedgelands, limestone heath, Acacia shrubland, coastal forest, open shrubland & on swales & dune slopes on highly alkaline sand.
