Description
Lava flow shot in February 2003 at the Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park ("East Rift Zone") on the Big Island.
At the top of the mountainside, where the source of the lava flow originated, were two thin "rivers", perhaps 15 to 20 feet wide each. Over a period of three hours, they gradually turned into the width of two-lane highways. The third, and largest flow to the right of the other two, which formed much later, was now the width of a four-lane highway. Boulders of molten rock the size of Volkswagen Beetles tumbled down this "river-highway" of flowing lava.
