Description

Penicillium fungus. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a Penicillium sp. fungus. Specialised threads (hyphae, brown), called conidiophores, are seen. Bunches of spores (pink), called conidia, are the fungal reproductive units. The antibiotic penicillin is obtained from certain types of Penicillium fungi. Other types are used in the fermentation of cheeses.
