Description
The Three Gorges Dam in China is the largest capacity hydroelectric power station in the world, and is currently said to be able to generate a total of 18,200 MW. The building of the project, however, has been accompanied by huge controversy, as the social and environmental impact on the surrounding area have been massive. The Yangtze river is suffering tremendously, huge water reservoirs are building up, and millions of people have been displaced in the area. There are also significant worries over the safety of the dam, especially regarding earthquakes which are relatively common in China.
