The Dreprung Monastery, 7 kilometers outside of Lhasa, was the home of the Dali Lama prior to the construction of the Potala Palace and once housed 7,000 monks. In the central prayer room over 200 monks sit chanting. The Monastery has a number of throne rooms and chapels with the usual images of The Buddha and other important members of the Tibetan Buddhist Parthenon. The kitchen where all of the food is prepared has a wood burning stove 40 ft by 40 ft with a number of openings for feeding in the wood and holders for cooking pots the size of a small car.
