Description

Angles from Santuario Chimayo, New Mexico. El Santuario de Chimayo was originally built in 1813, though the present buildings were constructed by 1816. The Abeyta and Chaves families owned the Sanctuary through much of its history, but the Archdiocese of Santa Fe has owned the site since 1929. Some pilgrims have been known to eat the dirt because of its purported healing powers, and so many visitors take a small of dirt as a souvenir that the church must replace it dirt with that of the surrounding landscape. Hosting almost 300,000 visitors per year, with about 30,000 of those making pilgrimages during Holy Week. Be sure to see other clips from this series.
