Silk is woven on machine looms, Central Vietnam. Silk is the most sought after fiber since ancient times. It is an extremely lustrous and soft fiber and is obtained from the caterpillar of the moth Bombyx mori. The production of silk is a time consuming and labour intensive practice. The various steps of silk production process include: Cultivation of Cocoons (Sericulture) Filature Operations Manufacture of Silk Yarns Wild silks are produced by caterpillars other than the mulberry silkworm and can be artificially cultivated. A variety of wild silks have been known and used in China, South Asia, and Europe since early times, but the scale of production was always far smaller than that of cultivated silks.
