Republic Day - India

Every January 26th, India celebrates the anniversary of its constitution taking effect in 1950. India gained independence from Britain on August 15, 1947, but was still largely governed by the colonial Government of India Act of 1935 before its Constitution took effect. Traditional Republic Day celebrations include a parade in New Delhi, the prime minister laying a wreath at the Amar Jawan Jyoti arched war memorial, and observing a moment of silence for fallen soldiers. Festivities continue until January 29th, when they come to a close with the Beating Retreat Ceremony, which includes performances by the Army, Navy, and Air Force bands.
