On February 7, 1964, the Beatles arrived in the United States for the first time, six days after “I Want to Hold Your Hand” hit #1 on the US Billboard charts. On February 9th, 73 million viewers tuned in to watch the group perform on the Ed Sullivan Show - about 40% of the US population. John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr gave their first public performance in the US at the Coliseum in Washington, DC on February 11th, with an audience of 20,000, and two back-to-back performances at Carnegie Hall the following day.
