NASA's First Astronauts

On April 9, 1959, NASA introduced its first class of seven astronauts: Scott Carpenter, L. Gordon Cooper Jr., John H. Glenn Jr., Virgil “Gus” Grissom, Walter Schirra Jr., Alan Shepard Jr., and Donald Slayton. All military test pilots, the group was carefully selected to participate in Project Mercury, the United States’ first manned space program. John H. Glenn eventually became the first American to orbit the earth. In this curated editorial stock footage collection, browse archival clips of the “Mercury Seven”.
