Drone footage of NYC

I'm going to NYC and have seen a lot of footage of the city, especially taken from over the Hudson river. I see new footage frequently. Are people just risking it or is it allowed to fly a drone over the river?

@imagine I would bring a small, unobtrusive drone and just do it.

The only way to fly drones is to fly in the "Grey area" of the law. I was super worried about flying my drone at Niagara Falls (USA side) a few years ago - just a phantom 3 - I put it up in the air and was worried someone was going to give me shit, but then I noticed there were 3 other drones flying around on the Canadian side.

As long as you fly safely, you're not likely to be bothered.

Will do, thanks. Have you flown around cities much?

"They were doing it so I thought it was OK." That will go over well, I'm sure.

If you don't know the answers to these questions, at least in the US, you should be aware that there is no excuse. I humbly suggest you look into it just a little.

There is a way so you can at least KNOW what you can get in trouble for, and act accordingly, preferably responsibly.

Use Google, and search for something like "Airspace Hudson River Drone"

Read.

How about flying a drone in Amsterdam and in the Netherlands in general? I would be very interested if feasible at all.
Cannot reply to your original question regarding NYC, all I can say is that here in the UK at the moment it is very liberal.
By respecting a few basic security rules, drones can be flown mostly everywhere, including London

You'll get arrested and fined here if they catch you flying above Amsterdam, or any other urban populated area. Different rules apply to those who use drones professionally and obtained prior permits.

Well, I think I will leave the bird at home next time I come to the dam :-)

And I've heard that some drone owners are afraid someone can easily steal their drone in the process :)

To be official, in the US the FAA has a free app (iPhone and Android) so you can check the map for recreational flying:
https://www.faa.gov/uas/where_to_fly/b4ufly/

Commercial flying (folks like us) requires a Part 107 certificate.

I don't think any of us like rules and regulations, but I fall on the official side of this argument, lest the news and public call on the FAA to take away what we have already.
