Because a channel broadcasts at (say) 4mb/s SD or 10-12mb/s HD doesn't mean that is what they accept as a bit rate for material used to make the programmes.
You start off with the "best" quality material and then compress the heck out of it for broadcast!

I think certain places like discovery / BBC, and other channels have specs they list on their website and a list of acceptable cameras. I think these 'lists' and requirements are a thing of the past, since a lot of shows make exceptions to their rules.

I agree, I think the technology is advancing faster than the lists. The camera criteria hasn't kept up with the types of imagery.
When video can be seen as obviously better than the specified cameras on the list, the list gets ignored. At some point I imagine a new specifications will be developed.

Whats the point in buying a race car if you are going to use it for grocery runs?
Here's the thing, camera companies are trying to get people to upgrade, they want the specs to be higher because it means more sales.
Networks resist change because it means they have to spend more money on new equipment. Many of them still accept digibeta tapes shot on digibeta cameras--- which is from 1982?? Ive never even seen a digibeta camera in person.

Many of those who bought the $4,900/FS100 must be scratching their head.

I think the FS100 is a great camera and probably out performs the Mark II/MarkIII in certain areas. I rented one with a nanoflash recorder and had amazing results...
If I can get that out of a $3500 mkiii I'll be very happy!

Lol, the rental agencies are all reporting the 5D3 rentals are booked out 4 months in advance. Lots of people renting them to check them out.
