Well, I do have a pair of Sennheisers and I can really recommend them. But then I don't have that much experience with other brands.

Sennheisers are really good. I have a couple of the M66 shotgun mics. More important is what situations you want to capture audio in to match the mic to that.

For what camera and for what application are you looking for a mic for?

- If it is for your DSLR, wait for the new mic from rode specifically design for DLSR.
- If is planned interviews in controlled situations where you are going to move the camera around then a wireless mic is better.
- If is for street interviews where you are going to move the camera around then a handheld wireless mic is better.
- I always see the shotgun mic as the last resort or backup mic.

Yes sennheiser makes very good mics.

Shure Corp has some really neat info: http://www.shure.com/americas/how-to/index.htm and also offers some publications on this. Last year at NAB they gave me a stack of a booklet titled "Microphone Techniques - Recording". I have passed these out to several filmmakers here in town during our Film Assoc. Meetings. - they really are informative and easy to understand. I believe you can simply email them and get a copy for free.
