Akennedy, We stopped using tape backups years ago after Hurricane Katrina.
What we found as many other companies did during that time was tapes were great if you had the same tape drive to restore from.

The problem is when you have a catastrophic failure such as Katrina (or fire, or just if the drive breaks) and you can't get to your original tape drive you don't have any backups.
Unless you have the exact drive the tapes were created on, you are out of luck with any possible restore.
When we evacuated N.O. we took our hard drive backups and tape backups. Since the tape drive was in N.O. and wasn't recoverable, we had the hard drives to restore and get our business back within days.

So now, I only use hard drives, and do redundant backups. Also keep one offsite. As if you keep all your backups in the same location, that is also a recipe for disaster.
Bottom line, I wouldn't trust a tape drive if my life depended on it.
