4:3 vs 16:9 photo ratio

Has anyone an idea why photo ratio 4:3 seems still to be the standart?
I think in most actual cameras today you can setup if you will shoot in 4:3 or 16:9. Whenever i look at my 4:3 shots i feel in any way uncomfortable and think it would look better in 16:9 fullscreen ratio.
But what ratio is better for selling?
