Just want some input of equipment like the low cost NINJA

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/759453-REG/ATOMOS_ATOMNJA001_ATOMNJA001_Ninja_Video_Hard.html

I saw a clip in Pond5 an artist that said his clip was shot in a GH2 with a Ninja recorder. Yet in the bhphoto page it says that the hdmi output of the GH2, T2i, 7D, and 5D are for monitoring and not recording.

Is that really true? All you guys with DSLR cannot use this sort of equipment?

I understand Jason.
I see people saying that with Magic Lantern the Ninja can be used in Canons.

Luxor The HDMI output on camcorders is uncompressed video signal whereas DSLRs do not have capability and can only be used to monitor the video signal. By the way I have both cameras dslr and camcorder.

The Ninja's is a nice unit but the screen at 4.3" is just too small.

That second youtube clip really isn't a good example.

Maybe the touchscreen size/resolution sucks, but does it captures like or better than a Sony X3 for $1k?

These are for camera with uncompressed HDMI output where you can get a CLEAN stream . You could record to from your 5d but there might be certain items you can't get rid of , like the red record light. The 5d hdmi output specs also might not give you 4:2:2, which is one reason a lot of people go for these external recorders. I had the chance to use a nano flash with the FS100, the quality wasn't AMAZING compared to the avchd, and honestly on some shots not even noticeable. I did feel like the post processing abilities were much greater with the 50mbps vs 24 mbps.

Would this thing make the videos from your Sony FX1000 be as detailed as videos from an EX3?

You would certainly get better video than HDV but I doubt it would be as good as an EX3.
A FX1000 only has one third CMOS sensors compared to half inch on an EX3. Pretty sure the EX3 is going to have superior glass and electronics as well.

You are right but not everybody can afford a $8,000+ camera.

I have read in blogs that the HDMI signal is on of the things that videographers ask Canon constantly to improve.

At this point Panasonic small GH2 may have the edge since Atomos claims it is fully compatible.
