For those who like compact camcorders and inconspicuous cameras. They improved a lot of things. They do not say if the OIS was improved or corrected. They left the 1/4 - 3ccds. Still great improvement for guys like me that like shooting sports, hiking, and sometimes go to film citizen protest.
Great stuff the timelapse capability and pre-record option.

I can't understand why interlaced video is still appreciated. Any suggestions?

This camera video specs at highest quality are: HQ mode, 1920 x 1080 (35 Mb/s VBR, MPEG-2 MP@HL) 1080/60i, 1080/50i, 1080/30p, 1080/25p, 1080/24p, 720/60p, 720/50p, 720/30p, 720/25p, 720/24p.
The interlaced is for 60i and 50i. I guess the processor is not powerful enough to handle 60p/50p. 60p drains battery life fast. That has been my experience. I seldom use it.

One reason for why interlace video is still being used by American broadcasters when transmitting in 1920x1080 due to bandwidth.

I have this camera and use it for editorial work. It replaced my HV30 which got smashed up on the job. It has an adjustable appearance, which means you can take off the mic and holder and scale the camera down to be more discrete. You do look like a "pro" with this camera and that helps in news situations and dealing with officials. I have some problems with the file output, which appears very jaggy even on different format outputs, no doubt this from the small sensors. The footage would not get past the inspectors at iStockphoto, for instance. Disappointing. What the specs look like on paper and what you get on the screen seem to be different events. I am not a technical person, but I am not satisfied with the appearance of the video image for a broader range of stock work - and I have inspected it on multiple format outputs. But it is more than acceptable for editorial/documentary. Also, another BIG problem, which is incredibly irritating, is the camera has no shoulder strap and no way (which I know of) to mount one. So you can't sling the camera over your shoulder and free up your hands. Oddly, this is a major issue when you are working. The camera must always be gripped in your hand via the mc attachment or you need to put it down - an invitation to damage. On the plus side of course is size and multiple format output for clients. You'll need to invest in a wide angle, as the aspect coming straight out of the lens is way to narrow. See recent footage

Do you have the old HM100 or the new HM150? The new is suppose to have "a new encoder and digital signal processor, adopted from JVC's 700 series cameras, deliver improved HD recording and add support for standard definition (SD)." http://pro.jvc.com/pro/pr/2011/releases/gyhm150.html
Have you checked if it outputs a clean 4:2:2 uncompressed signal from the HDMI port?
Maybe you can get an artisan to construct a strap that attaches to the metal knob that holds the mic unit.
Anyway, great flood videos! Nothing in the news here of what is happening over there. Get your malaria shots.

I have the pervious model, HM100. Haven't checked on the HDMI port, but I will. Thought about adding a strap - but I'll think I'll sell the camera when I go back to the states in 6 months. It gives a lot of bang for 2500 bucks.
