Alphonse Bertillon (1853-1914), French police officer and criminologist, who created a scientific system to record the identities of criminals. The method was based on physical measurements, photographs, and precise descriptions. Photographing of criminals began in the 1840s but it was not until 1888 that Bertillon standardized the process, inventing the mug shot.
