Driving Videos: How To Make Them Better

brandonaaron 31 Jan 2013 00:17
I've just hacked my way into driving videos, but I would love to find ways of making them better without $100k

I think these are nice, some on stock sites, but need to improve, hope they are useful!!

Are you asking for comments / critique or is this just a marketing try?

This one was done by simply holding the camera still on the dashboard, with a wide angle, internal stabilization lens and smooth section of highway.

That looks nice.

I am looking for advice, and tips.

If you want to do a lot then I suggest getting a mount - one of the first videos I uploaded here (not sold yet) was made with a "cheap" ($100) suction mount:

I have also shot other videos with this mount

Hi brandonarron, I have been working for a short while with a Go-Pro that has been valuable due to it's compact size. I am working on trying to get some good shots of motorcycling adventures on classic bikes but have found the vibration they kick out is a real problem. I've managed to get a few shots but not up to the quality I'd like. At the moment, here in the UK the weather is rubbish so will need to wait until the spring for some more experiments.

Brandon, I got a little rubber mat that sits on the dash and grips things plastic like a cell phone..in this case helps the camera from sliding. They can be picked up for a few dollars. Keep in mind also that the wider angle the lens is, the better all the little bumps can be disguised.

Sounds like some awesome tips. Thanks.

I'm thinking two suction cups for a DSLR. Yeah, non-intensive mounting apps are limited options. I will do a search on that. I normally found a way to get my tripod nested over between the driver and passenger seat. Elsewise, it seemed hard to stabilise.I supposed it might look odd to passers by, but windows are in full effect mostly.

I also watch out for certain US bridges. I was pulled over and my memory erased over Bridge in New York for 9/11 stuff. Can you believe it? There was a toll, so the security monitor had enough time to stop me. It would have been quite creepy to have someone break down my door with that.

Anyway, some experiences, I will look more into those ways. The motorcycle stuff is nice. I don't know how to drive one. I have bicycle go pro now, but I would love to use a better one. I used my Gorillapod on the back rack, and got some great shots.

Improving my had tech, I guess, is easier nowadays...

Good idea on the wide Michael. I got into wide lenses and fisheyes back in 2007.

Drive slower is one way I have found to make it smoother. It also makes people behind you mad!

I also tried letting a lot of air out of my front tires and mounting my go pro to the front bumper.

It turned out ok but not exactly what I wanted.
