You are right formica and chrome were a different period.

I know what you mean about cigarettes stinking the house out. Wonder what they use on film sets to get this effect.
You may be able to fake it with some kind of incense stick just after it's first lit.

A new thread on low budget special effects is probably in order.

I think a thread on SFX would be a great thing.

I did a lot of research on the cigarettes when I was shooting the Noir film. Seems film people still use real cigarettes as the fake ones don't make realistic smoke.
The cigarettes I used was a herbal (no not that herb) kind. Made of rose leaves or something like that.
When I ordered them I thought they wouldn't stink like real cigarettes. I was wrong. I think they stunk more.
