Decent Quality Lighting Kit under $500?

I'm looking to get a decent quality 3 point lighting kit that can be taken apart on a regular basis (for traveling shoots). The ones I've seen on Amazon/ebay all have terrible reviews about how flimsy/cheap they are. I'm wondering if any of you can recommend a kit for under $500? Doesn't have to be the nicest just one that won't fall apart from being torn down regularly.

A couple of years ago I went to an all LED kit for portable use. It's just easier to pack and setup. Plus I can run the lights on batteries for hours.
And I don't have to worry about heat and someone getting burned.
I bought my 3 light kit for about $1200 but that was then when LED's were just getting in a fair amount of use. I wouldn't have any issues getting one of these now.

And a smaller one for hair light.

You will still have to use some diffusion as the LED's aren't as soft as fluorescent but not as harsh as tungsten.

Wow so compact, I love them! thanks for the input Jake =) What do you use for diffusion?

WIth LED's since there isn't much heat I use anything from Rosco frost sheets to thin translucent white foam like packing material.
You'll get different strengths of diffusion depending on how far from the light source you place the diffusion sheet.

If you can stretch to it, go for bi-color LED light panels

Jake, just bought the light kit you mentioned. Ended up getting on amazon and saving $30. just have to wait 3 wks for it to ship from China lol. Loving the fact that you can put batteries into the back of the lights. Bought 4 lights and a wall/car charger on ebay for $34. Not a bad deal at all =) will followup with a post after I get try them out.

COOL!
Yeah, I'm always blown away that I can bring 500 watts of light and run off of batteries for hours.

Jake, you mentioned using a 3rd smaller hair light. i bought this LED light a few years back, would this be sufficient?

I would think so. It looks about the same as the one I have.
You only need a small amount of light for hair or accent of something.

I purchased bright white light bulbs for $35 each. They are very large, not sure the wattage but I would guess they are 250w, and they fit in a normal lamp socket. when I say they are large, they are about the size of a half gallon of milk if not bigger, per bulb.
