GoPro Karma and GoPro 5

No fisheye? There is a crazy amount of fisheye.

I think I read somewhere that you can convert from fisheye "in camera" no need for Studio. Can't find the source.

Perhaps ... if the angle of the camera remains the same .... but in a drone it usually doesn't .. especially with tilts ... really cool shots, aerial tilts ... but no software is going to correct the beach ball effect while the camera moves from horizontal to vertical. Well .. OK ... some software might. I have not yet experienced this miracle.

But hey ... I would not knock the drone just for this reason ... it's pretty cool, and well priced. But I would not buy it expecting to be able to fix this. Maybe a Peau lens would help .. sure. Add $150 or so to the price ($150 more if you have them install it).

Then what about exposure? Being able to control exposure is really important. As in decide what you like based on what you see, then lock it in, or have it smoothly automatically adapt to changing light .. something the GoPro is terrible at ... not sure if they fixed that yet.

As I mentioned, the portability factor is HUGE. That in itself may make it worth it. I'll wait, personally, as this is important to more manufacturers out there, and a better more pro solution may be just around the corner.

And I remember well the debacle with the dodgy WiFi and crap intermittant recording clips of the Hero3. Will this thing work as well as the Hero3? Or will there be a year befoe they "fix" it to make it work as advertised?

Just thoughts. It looks fun.

I am sure "a year befoe they "fix" it to make it work as advertised" is the right answer.

In camera or Studio conversion from fisheye eats up a ton of resolution... There is no substitute for a real lens.

I'm gonna get this combo and sell off my phantom 3. I always wanted a gopro drone combo, and this new gopro looks really sexy with the stabilizer.

Anyone need a phantom 3 advanced?

To me there is a huge advantage having a removable GoPro type camera. The drone itself can remain viable for a long time but cameras come and go. If a camera breaks I don't want to spend a fortune for a proprietary camera like DJI. DJI got the drone industry going strong but they just have too many skeletons in the closet, deny any problems when they are very widespread and poor support. No more DJI for me after owning three of them.

The hero 5 has in the field of view settings a new linear setting which is supposed eliminated the fisheye effect.

The new features of the Hero 5 are not a game changer for me at $400 dollars as I have a 3+ black and 4 black and both lens modification that do a very good job both in the air and on the ground. If I need more coverage in the air I also have 3+ silver with a stock lens.

Of course, you know, the GoPro Karma is a GoPro only drone? That's about as proprietary as it gets. Not gonna find other cams to stick on there that will work as well as its design. DJI just bit me .. ordered a Z3 to go with the A3+LB2 that I'm using to build a rig ... latest response of DJI to me as I asked why it's not working so well is basically they are working on the firmware to make it work better ... so no, they are not friends to me, but, have the gear that will make my rig work. It WILL work (it kinda already does, but I have some aluminum fabrication to finish and to work out a workaround for when the DJI stuff doesn't talk to itself properly)

I'll look into that lens correction Linear mode ... first glance sez yep, pretty cool This https://youtu.be/Cf16mp6Nbh8?t=600 is pretty nice ... I wonder if there's a "gotcha"..

AHA! Found it ... Linear mode only available in 1080 and 2.7K ... no 4K Linear, and no 4K IS ...

Dig the voice control ... Hell, I'm still interested. First things first though.

Yeah, prolly not underwater either, or when it's mounted on your car's hood or helicopter's tail...

But it's still pretty neat.
