Canon EOS C300

Unless Canon announces a new affordable DSLR soon, I think I'm still planning to get two 60D bodies by the end of January.

I guess the real price will be something around 10-15k USD. The 20k is not a shelf price. It is a marketing strategy of any company to announce a big price before the product gets to the shelves so they could later drop it.

So what would be the advantage of a Canon C300 over a Sony FS100 w NanoFlash?

this camera is a major, major disappointment.

Producers, production movies, and even TV shows seem to be happy with the 5D MKII and 7D. Why would they spend $20K where they could buy 15 7D's for the same price? I'm sure they will sell but it will have to be the deep pocket producers.

C300 features over the 5D Mark II

50 mbs XF compression is better than MPEG4 (more color data per pixel).
Hot swappable CF cards.
No 12 minute limit on shooting.
PL mount (more $$$$) without breaking the warranty
XLR connections
Viewfinder
Much better low light performance
Chip is capable of shooting 4k at 24 fps (BIOS upgrade maybe?)
No line skipping (no Moire)
Built-in ND filter
EOS app on iPad lets you control all settings, including focus using Canon AF lenses.

Is it worth the extra money for all that? Not to me, but I can see a lot of existing 5D Hollywood types with deep pockets who are extremely happy right now.

Da Vinci says in his On Painting that in order to make the best painting one needs the most expensive canvas, color and brush one could buy. As long as all those pretty minor suplimentary features let you do your work they are worth all the money. If I had the money I would pay 20k for a camera that would suit my needs. Of course, Da Vinci did not expressly mentioned that man is equally important, perhaps because he thought of himself. I would add to Da Vinci's equation and write it as it follows: In order to create the best work of art one needs the most expensive canvas, color, brush and artist one could buy.
Shortly said: expansive art is done with expansive materials, tools and people.

.... So these means that Da Vinci's suppliers knowing how Da Vinci's valued things based on price and not in quality could easily inflate prices of low quality canvas and brushes.... ;-) I want that kind of client.

As a former electronic production manager for Motorola, I see very little manufacturing cost increase from the Canon XF105 into the Canon C300. The mayor internal components that would be more expensive are the chips and processors. Anything else would really increase manufacturing cost slightly even if assembled by hand.

I peronally think the Panasonic AG-AF101 addressed all these issues a while ago, so I bought one. They are less than half the price, and with the addition of a Ninja, shoot native Prores 4:2:2. It was called the 'canon killer' when it came out. If Canon have produced this (it looks about as ugly) to compete, they should at least compete on the price. I got fed up waiting for the Scarlet, and I agree with the comments about the ridiculous modularity of the Red offerings.

I'm hoping the Panny will keep me happy for a couple more years. At last a home for all my old Nikon AI lenses.
