New BlackMagic Cameras

Vader: Really? CMOS? Any "real" cameras other than the one we are theoretically discussing and the F55? I'll have to look around.

What size screen does it take to make 4K make sense as far as viewing?

A lot bigger screen than most household have or will ever buy.

Man are you guys on the wrong page. Don - it is and has been for over a year pretty much standard that producers can handle 4K just fine - particularly in the professional production world. I really could care less about the rest as my target market is the pro world.

Miz: Screen size is irrelevant. Sony showed some gigantic screens at 4K that would not fit in my living room. There is a new problem with 4K however... one that is overlooked by many.... makeup on the actor. It is a whole new world for makeup artists.
Reg cameras... have a look at the Ion - it uses a global shutter and beats the crap out of GoPro. No underwater case necessary either as it is waterproof as is - totally sealed. Of course this is HD not 4K...

I have been shooting 4K time lapse without a 4K camera now for about 2 years already. :)

4k = the amount of income I want to make in stock video each month.
4k camera for 4k income. LOL

On more serious issues: if the 2k BMCC files were huge how much bigger are 4k BMCC files. That is very serious storage space investment considering that you must also have backups of each file in separate disks.

For what it's worth, those Ion people don't write back to professional/potential buyer enquiries, AND no mention of global shutter, and all the vid samples show terrible skew. Oh...not totally sealed, either....there is a gasket you have to keep clean or else.

Next!

(Still considering the Black Magic pocket guy even though it's not got the global shutter.....as Luxor mentioned, what is the impact of working with 4K files? And since I am in the market for a smaller cam, I have things to consider. Sony VG900 looks kinda tasty!)

Sony VG900 was something I was looking at a while ago, but it didn't seem to take off... or at least no one is buying it and giving it great reviews. Let me know if you find anything good on it miz.

I also wanted to buy a small camcorder and opted for the VG900 but after I saw some footage from it I jumped back. It's very very soft and awful. It looks like it's line skipping and also has a very bad dynamic range in my opinion. Maybe Im too spoiled but you should testdrive it for a day or rent it and see for yourself.
