found this - and it is very informative... Just an FYI for all of you. In the video towards the end they show the comparison of many of the listed cameras doing the exact same shoot with same lighting. - Enjoy

This test is really for independent filmmakers and web cinematographers who are creating content with the look and feel of a 35mm motion picture. See a same shot comparison of: 35mm motion picture, RED, EX3, HVX200, HPX170, HPX3000, Sony EX3, Nikon D90, Canon 5D Mark II, Letus35 Ultimate and Elite DOF adapters, RedRock Micro and more. Follow a discussion by four filmmakers ranging in age from 18-46.

Hey Andy,
Is there a link?
ironstrike 17 Feb 2009 20:57
lolz post the link plz

I think you should adapt the lighting based on the type of camera you are using anyway. Its difficult to run a controled experiment when you are comparing apples and oranges. A konvas film camera is nothing like a nikon d90.

Be careful about the opinions of "filmmakers" ... lots of people call themselves filmmakers. I know a dentist, a decorator, a manager who all call themselves "filmmakers" ... In fact I hate calling myself a filmmaker because I don't want to be lumped into the same group.

I have seen the video he is talking about. Has the 4 people sitting in a circle, and the one kid is an independent film maker.

Thanx Vader!

I totally agree the camera is just a tool, the one who uses it must be the master and the artist. But I wasn't really impressed by their knowledge, they didn't talk about exposure range, display resolution.

Plus when you use film you have to make IN and IP prints which reduces the clarity of the screen but it doesn't matter because of the display res ...Ive seen HVX and XDcam on the bigscreen and I didn't notice compression. And 4k is useless to any distributor unless you plan on making IMAX films.

I know the DPs job is supposed to be photography not figuring all this stuff out... However I think to be successful you need to have a good creative AND technical mind.

Here is my 2cents
First off with the current state of the 5D firmware I would not pick it for any thing other than Stock footage. It just takes too much effort to get it todo what you want. If I had a $3000 camera budget I would probably go with something like the FX1000.

Even if you dont consider the lack of control of the shutter/ISO/Aperature the fact that you cant use a wired remote to trigger the start and stop of a movie is show stopper for me. The IR remotes like the RC-1 can start the camera in movie mode but the sensor is at the front of the camera so you cant start it from behind.

Yeah but film cameras are even more of a pain to work with. Especially the old ones you have to crank yourself (no motor). So considering the fact that the sensor is the same size as a vistavision film camera its not that bad lol.
