hi.
i received an e-mail now, from flux.
they switched to a subscription based model for using their vst, instead of buying them.
i think it's super cool, i dont use those vst, but the idea i think should be borrowed by all vst makers.
renting vsts for a month or what period you want, as with adobe's cc (instead of buying the thing), seems much cooler.
here is their plan:
http://www.fluxhome.com/shop/subscriptions
im not advertising for them, i dont use them, but it seems cool that they did this and id like to see more doing this.

I think it definitely depends on the vst. East West introduced this with the libraries and I have already took advantage of that a couple times. If it's something you'll only need a few times or so, and maybe you'll go long periods of time without using it, I think it's a good plan. But for VST and instruments you will use all the time, you may end up paying more in the long run than if you'd just bought the thing. Also you would have to know that you are going to use many different plugs/instruments from the same company, not just one of them. If you only need one or two plugins, it would be more worth it just to buy the them outright. I wish they would have like a rent to own kind of model. Let's say you subscribed to Flux for a long time, then decide to quit your plan. Well, now you just spent a bunch of money, with nothing to show for it. You can't even have buyers remorse because you don't even own anything, just a black hole in your wallet. Anyways, I'm being facetious. Theoretically, paying for the plan will help you make better music, and in turn more money, so it will even out, and hopefully work more in your favor. But I guess I see it as a potential sink hole for musician's money. I think we can get into a tendency of thinking that we NEED such and such plugin, when in reality we already have everything we need. So many plugin developers want to make us think we need their plugin, but it just takes more money from us that we do not need to be spending.
Unless there are several plugins or instruments from a company that you absolutely must use, then I would not recommend going with a subscription. but I also wouldn't recommend it if there are only 1 or 2 plugins from a company you must use. Just save up and buy them. Or, if there is some really really expensive plugins that you only need once in a while, and the subscription isn't too pricey, then from time to time that would be a good idea. I guess I think of it like a band renting a PA or sound system when they play a live show.

you're right with that observation. indeed, if something is more readily available and affordable i admit i fall into the trap of considering it more necessary than it was before. it's a marketing gimmick somehow and it works. but it also can be a good idea. and i didnt know about ewql, i thought it would be cool if they did it, and now, from what you say (and i accessed the site), they did do it.

I agree wholeheartedly with this comment "So many plugin developers want to make us think we need their plugin, but it just takes more money from us that we do not need to be spending."
I take may steps back before purchasing anymore VSTs nowadays
