Nikon just announced the new D300s adding video to the D300. Why do they stick to this D Video concept of 720p @ 24fps: here is part of the press release
The Benchmark of Speed, Performance and Reliability
Whether on the front lines of spot news or behind the scenes at a spring wedding, users of the D300s can record HD video clips at 720p resolution with a smooth cinematic 24 fps rate. In addition, the D300s also records high fidelity audio—either with the convenient built-in microphone or by using the external stereo microphone input. Photographers can trim video length on the fly and apply Picture Controls to video, modifying the tone and color. Additionally, users can autofocus while recording video, using contrast detect AF, and do so while composing on the D300s’ bright three-inch 920,000-dot LCD screen.
Guess I will still be looking for 1080p but probably not from Nikon.

Yeah, I don't know why they keep with 720 unless its because of the size of the sensor and processor. I'm sure it takes a lot of power to process 1080
Also that $1700 price tag is steep. If I were looking at that I would save the rest of the money and go with the 5d
Still not 1080 but for the money that Panasonic is a nice camera.

The Panasonic is looking good for the price.
The 720p might be because ABC, ESPN and FOX television in the US have gone with that as their HD TV broadcast standard, primarily because of sport.

Yeah but are the networks shooting at 24p? Somehow I don't think so...
Also, if you are primarily getting a DSLR for video, I don''t see any advantage of the D300s over the D5000 for video. The advantages of the D300s over the D5000 are in stills.
If I was gonna save up $1700 for DSLR video, I'd just save up the extra grand and get the D5 as Jake suggested. Or get the Panasonic.
