Sony A7r3 and A73

I wonder why both of these new cameras from Sony are crippled with "only" UHD (as opposed to DCI 4K) lousy codecs (compared to GH5 and GH5s) and lousy, standard higher frame rates at lower resolutions (not even UHD 60p)?

I mean really, come ON Sony!

Geez. I must be missing something.

The old ones have that too. I mean .. besides that, obviously. Why cripple a lovely FF camera in this day and age with crappy codecs and consumer frame rates and resolutions? Michele has an A7r3, and it's great, yeah, and makes my big Sony lens look delicious, but the video is .. well ... the GH5 is better (24/30P DCI, 400mb/s, 60P UHD, 150Mb/s, and VFR up to 180fps at 1080, although going higher than 120 is not so good .... ) So my question is to Sony, why not better, or even equal? Was really hoping for that. The low light capability should be great, and I was looking forward to it. I understand bandwidth tradeoffs and all that, but hell, this is YEARS later, and the camera I was waiting for is ... not much better than the old one. I guess I saved money, anyway .. the older models are cheaper now. But still FF.

Have you considered the Terra 4K from Kinefinity ? It's look awesome except for the sub-zero temperatures, according to their website it may not work below 0°c

Whoah ... def worth looking into. The temperature thing is a big problem, and there seem to be a LOT of qualifiers (e.g. "It has this feature but you can only use it in this mode and half the other cool features don't work..") so I'm a little leery, but I really like the fact that it has an e-mount adapter, but is s35 sensor, not FF (unless using KineEnhancer) so might as well stick with FS700+speedbooster ...

Will be checking it out though .. .6K is really really fun stuff.

@Mizamook Philip Bloom have done some test with https://vimeo.com/258404320

Love the funny ending. Mr Bloom can make ANY camera look good, of course, regardless of subject. Or is that the other way around?

Back to topic, my 28-135 G lens looks luscious on the A7r3, but I was REALLY hoping they would up the ante with the new FF cameras and make something comparable so I would not have to haul this monster around with my FS700/7Q+ to get the goods. https://www.cinema5d.com/sony-28-135mm-review-cine-zoom-lens/

I'm hoping to get smaller lighter gear! Lenses are one thing, but big honkin bodies with external viewfinders and recorders are not conducive to "easy does it"

On a good note, however, the 100mb/s UHD codec of the A7r3 is surprisingly tolerant. Michele shots some video of ice on beach in sunlight yesterday .. at first glance at one of the shots it looked overexposed beyond all help, but she worked it a little in Resolve and it actually came out quite nice ...

I'm not sure about the practical value of the IBIS compared to the GH5 IBIS for handheld work. Have not done exhaustive tests yet though, but I will say I am underwhelmed.
