Malta is an archipelago in the central Mediterranean, between Sicily and the coast of North Africa. It is a state known for its historical sites linked to a succession of rulers, including the Romans, Moors, Knights of the Order of St. John, French and British. It has many fortresses, megalithic temples, and the Hypogeum of Ħal Saflieni, an underground complex of halls and mortuary chambers dating from around 4000 BC. J.-C.
