The state of Montana boasts 169,829 miles of river and is not only a source of recreation for outdoor activities like fishing, floating, and hunting but also an important source of water for the states large agriculture industry. Montana has more cows than people with a human population of 1.1 million and 2.16 million cows in 2023 in an area of 147,040 square miles. This large swath of agriculture land in between Montana's prairies and mountains gives the state a wide open and empty feel as rivers meander for miles under the Big Sky. Tourism is a large industry in Montana and river outfitting overnight trips and fly fishing trips is a big part of Montana lifestyle both recreationally and guided.
