Two deserts, two large ecosystems whose characteristics are determined primarily by elevation, come together at Joshua Tree National Park, located in southeastern California. Below 3,000 feet, the Colorado Desert encompasses the eastern part of the park and features natural gardens of creosote bush, ocotillo, and cholla cactus. Joshua tree National Park is a national monument since 1936 to preserve a variety of animal and plant life, including the unique Joshua trees. Joshua Tree is a national park since 1994. Death Valley National Park is the lowest point in the Western Hemisphere and one of the hottest places in the world.
