Canon R5C

I've been shooting the Canon R5 since it first came out. Never a problem with anything. No heat problems like many say. I used it to the extreme in West Africa for thirteen months taking thousands of 4K and 8K videos in 90 deg temps and 90% humidity. I shot extended day long interview shots indoors in extreme heat and humidity all day long in HD with never a problem.

So now I'm looking at the CANON R5C. Is anyone shotting this yet? Feedback? I'm not too concerned about the shorter battery life. I carry what I will need. Heat, noise, color and clarity? Not what some one else has told you or what you have read.

I can read reviews so just want to hear from actual users. Thanks!

Guess no one has upgraded to R5C yet?

We have gone from the R5 to R5 C and the picture quality is great. There are a lot more choices for color profiles and codecs to choose from which are nice for color grading. However there are times we wished we kept an R5 around. Yes the battery and power is a major pain for longer video shoots we we move around. We have picked up other power options for that, with many new batteries, AC power, and portable power supplies. Mostly we use them for interviews, b-roll, and stock is all extra.

Our first one worked for one day and died, but it was replaced. The menu for video is different then the R5, so you need to learn a few things if your not familiar with it. We tried to see if we could use the canon app to see if we could remote shoot video though your phone as just an option, nope. However there are a lot of extra nice options with this camera if you feel you need them.

Did we need to upgrade to them for what we do. Not really, but some of the extra features are nice. The power issues is our number one complaint, and you need the correct power input to work right to have enough juice and work the tracking with some lenses. The non in body IS has not been an issue that we can tell either.

For the price and the features it is a nice option, if those extras fit into your daily use. As for video image quality I wouldn't save you see much of any change, only the options for grading.

Hopefully some of this rambling helps you decide.

Thanks. I have and will keep my R5 as a backup. Totally happy with it. I need to sell my 1DX MK II and 5D MK IV. I like the form and fit of the R5 so to compliment I believe I will get the 5C as a second body. I travel a lot and if I happen top drop one I need a backup.

Thanks for the input.

You out of Utah? Do I know ya'll? Been shooting for P5 since 2005 in Utah as an individual. Where ya located?

Good idea to keep one of the R5's for a bit. I told the main man here to do that with ours first but nope sold them right away. Now we wished we kept one.

We are out of Orem where our office and studio is, but our main business is video production under Creative Media Group. Stock was a side project back in the day but then grew into something extra for us. The main man here is John Farr, not sure if you know each other or not. Maybe one day you guys could touch base. You never know what could work out for things.

I got the R5C and plan on keep the R5 as a run and gun backup. The battery life does suck. Went through three batteries in what would have been one of a little more in the R5. The quality looks great. Lots of features that a studio would like. The photo side is basically the same as R5. I ordered an external battery so that problem will go away. I managed to get it at 20% off for a USA model so I'm happy. Born and raised in Orem.

Yeah that battery life is way worse than we expected it to be. We have various power options for it now, but still that R5 was much nicer for battery juice. The extra video options sure are nice to have thats for sure. Hard to beat to options for the price.
The same goes for myself, born in Orem and moved around a bit but boomeranged right back.

Hi,
i tried the camera on a job during the month of August and i had the opportunity to make some clips for myself too. The camera is wonderful despite the battery issue. Congrats on the purchase Rekindle!

I bought an external v-mount battery that works great and is the same as at least four internal or more batteries. I don't mind the twenty minute or so time as long as I have a pocket full of batteries of the external with me.

I do not like the fact that when in video full manual exposure control requires using the on screen menu. The photos side is exactly the same as the R5. I wish they would give the R5 exposure control back with dials. For me alone that is a deal breaker. Or until I get used to it.
