4K Rendering and Uploading Requirements

I've been attempting to process and render some time-lapses in 4K, however I'm not having much luck figuring out how to get it right. There does not seem to be much information in the FAQ, so I was hoping to clarify the required specifications. I use Sony Vegas Pro 11, which has a 4K (4096x2304) template for editing, but no matching rendering templates.

Is 4096x2304 the correct size to aim for? What file type does the rendered file need to be? The .mov, Quicktime Photo-Jpeg, format I normally render my 1080p files with, will not let me increase the frame size beyond 2048 any direction. Not sure if it's a limitation of the codec, my software or if I'm missing something. One Sony AVI files type allowed a 4K render after some adjustment, but I'm not sure it's an acceptable file type for pond5, and the test render I made came out over 6.6 gigs, 3 times the 2.2 maximum stated in Pond5's FAQ.

Any help or clarification would be greatly appreciated!

I was just talking about this down below in the requests section.

I've been rendering at 3840x2160, since that's the ultra HDTV spec. But I believe 4096x2160 is also an acceptable resolution.

But I've seen other resolutions here from other users. I think for all future clips, I'm going to use the 3840 spec. with a 75% PhotoJPEG codec until a better codec comes down the pike.

4k is a weird beast right now :-)
There are different formats that people are calling 4k, or ULTRA HD.

The new 4k black magic shoots at 3840x2160, which seems like the new tv's coming out are also this. This is 4x the pixels as 1920x1080.

The good thing about 4096x2304 is that 16:9 aspect ratio (1.7778), which is the same as the 3840x2160. So you could put it at that higher resolution and then someone could down convert with no issues. For now that might be the safest option.

That makes sense on the frame size options. PhotoJpeg should theoretically be able to handle a 4K, right? The codec settings in Vegas won't let me go past 2048x2048.

PhotoJPEG handles 4K just fine. I think the new H.265 will handle it better when it comes out.

H265 has no improvements over H264 in regard to 4k but it only doubles the data rate and extends it to 8k. According to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H264, H264 Level 5.1 can compress 3840x2160 up to 31.7 FPS and 720,000 kbits/sec(High 10 profile). With level 5.2 and High 10 profile, H264 can compress 4,096×2,304 at 56.3 FPS. So, H264 can handle 4k too. It is just a matter of learning how to set level and profile. Or you need more than 720,000 kbits/sec?

@ Atomazul Vegas cannot handle 4k nor 2k so don't waste your time. If by chance you have After Effects use it for 4k/2k clips.

Vegas an do it as an .avi.... Sony YUV - but I don't know why the PJPEG codec is crippled.

i put my 4K in 4096x2304 and PhotoJPEG 25p to p5 like "dapoopta" but i think about the RED scarlet 4480x2304 or RED dragon 6144x3160 for the future uploads!
What do you think?

Sony Vegas can only work with 4K but not render to 4K. I talked with them a year ago about that and one only gets boilerplate answers. Considering they are on the verge of actually releasing camera updates to handle 4K one might wonder if they will then, and only then offer 4K renders on Vegas Pro 12 (or greater).
