How to get first sale?

WGCProductions 7 Dec 2015 06:21
Hey Pond5! I'm still fairly new to the stock footage community. I uploaded some footage months ago and got no bites. I've come back to the site to upload some more clips and I was just wondering if anyone does anything specific to get those first sales on their content. I'd really like to sell some of my work (at least a little bit).

There are 4.5 mio footages on P5. Needless to say that it must be difficult to find especially yours.
You have to upload more highest quality material.

yes, im on audio, but you have to be realistic, do you really expect sales with 5 clips in a pool of 4.5 million??

I understand that I need more content. I have more content waiting to be reviewed right now. I was just asking if there's anything you guys do on the promotion side of things...?

Good keywording. You can promote yourself on facebook, twitter, etc. but I don't know how well that works. Time is the biggest secret... just be patient.

I'm in the same way of you.
I'm understanding how it works mainly through community...

I think the whole community thing is hype. You the and process and file and keyword it well and keep doing that. Not just any file, ii should have some relevance for someone.

Hi WGCProductions I'm intersted in your question as I'm considering uploading footage. I have done some research and starting to conclude you need around 30,000 clips (based on figures of sales of 5 per day @ $40 each /50% = $100 per day) to make any realistic sales/income. If I travel and shoot say 5 quality clips per day /edit /upload and get passed (not all are passed) x 5 days per week x52 weeks = 1300 per year / 30,000 = 23 years !! Just in time to retire lol.

Keep the format to a standard ratio. Stick with 19:6. Lower prices will appear to many buyers as lower quality. Be proud of your work. Low prices will not drive sales. When you get a thousand clips and no sales then ask the question again.

Hi RekindlePhoto, I agree and you have some great footage, but I've also seen some low price footage for just $10 and is excellent.
I agree with you about keeping prices high, but as what has happened with shock photo and over supply, prices will drop unless you are with the likes of Getty, simple market forces in action. Just to mention istock are now only offering $8 per 4K Clips same a HD..what a joke!
I see you have over 20,000 clips can you really make a decent living from your footage and do you do this full time ? I'm still considering is it worth it !!
