Selling SFX

Marbury 2 Aug 2010 02:44
I am in a bit of a dilemma. I have a huge SFX library I have created and am currently selling on an exclusive basis with another microstock site so at the moment I can only submit music here. So far sales are average and I am informed that they will get better because it's early days and they like my sounds. Having said that, the pricing here is more attractive to me as you can set your own. The site I am currently with sets the price for you and it averages around 90 cents per download.

I would be interested to know how it's going here for anyone who contributes SFX files.

I sell a decent amount of sound effects. Feel free to poke around my collection and see what is selling and what isn't. I've been selling stock sfx on here since November (and it is the first place I came to for selling stock) and I get a sfx sale almost every other day. I find that groups of sfx, such as my audience applause sounds or nature ambiences, are bought together in groups since buyers usually want some variety for their projects' soundtrack.

This is my experience thus far, "in my opinion" this is a place where videographers, tv people and one-man-band production types come. The types of sound that the bulk of them are seeking out are "the basics". The applauses, the whooshes, the gunshots, the explosions etc. I don't believe any high-end film sound folks are coming here to buy sounds. It's certainly not a knock on the site or the caliber of the contributors, but those folks are getting it themselves or relying on "brand-name" libraries or more audio-centric online distributors. That's not to say this model won't and can't evolve into that, (the more good recordists on here, the better for all of us), it's just not there yet. So, if you are a pro recordist and looking to maximize sales as soon as possible, stick to the basics. You might be spinning your wheels uploading 100 different versions of flourescent ballast buzzes. That's the sort of thing that is more specific and I don't see this being an outlet (yet) for that.

I sell SFX exclusive on another large branded site but they have introduced changes that I am ( as well as a lot of others there) not happy with. I am just wondering if it's worth giving up exclusivity and selling SFX here but if it's only basic I am not so shure. I sell a few FX every day and get on average 80 cents-90 cents for each download. Quite low priced really.

I have taken the plunge and cancelled my exclusivity which will come into effect in 30 days time. Then I will be free to submit here :-)

I hope so.

When filing in the SFX details, I have ticked the box "SFX" but nothing happens. I am still left with the music related choices. How do I find the SFX categories ?
