I've got a quick question on the autofocus. There are plenty of situations where there's not enough time to focus manually, particularly when shooting 'in the field'. To those who have the GH4 now, what do you think of the autofocus in video mode?

I only have manual lens but from the tests I seen the autofocus isn't smooth or fast.
But I have ordered a auto focus mft lens so I'll make my own test when I get it.

I did a shoot recently with the GH4 and a couple of observations, I was using the 12-35 f2.8 Panasonic in daylight with a subject at 40 to 50 feet the autofocus is instant and very accurate, if you get a grab shot having been at infinity and just press the filming button as opposed to the shutter release so the camera does not autofocus, it's surprising how deep the depth of field with the smaller sensor gives a sharp image at the 35mm setting of this lens, it's like everything is in focus ( not quite but close). I did a test using autofocus during filming, tracking from near to far inside the house to outside and the continuous autofocus worked but was slow for video, you saw the focus come in and out maybe a half second or slightly less. This is with a "pro" X Panasonic lens, so a non X lens might be a lot worse.

Normstock. is there an "autofocus speed control" in the menu? and does it work?

I think no mater what they do camcorders will always have a better autofocus because of the smaller sensor and wider depth of field.

^ No there is no speed control but there are a lot of options for type of focus, tracking, still and focus points as well as touch focusing using the LCD

Thanks for the comments guys. It sounds like it will need a fast lense in order to make use of the improved autofocus over the GH3. The 12-35 seems perfect for that job.

This was my first personal project with my new Panasonic GH4 camera. I have a bit of a learning curve ahead of me as my previous experience was only with camcorders. Lenses used were the Panasonic 14-45mm, 45-175mm and Olympus 60mm macro. Other equipment included the Benro S6 tripod and Glideshot jib. ISO 800 and 1600 using standard and cine-v all 0s.
