Mark II with Premiere CS3

Quicktime also has a frame rate setting. Photo jpeg is for progressive (30p) and motion jpegB is for interlace (29.97). The question is why would anyone want to take a progressive clip and convert it to interlace?

It was frame blending, in CS3. It is on by default, and if you modify the speed under 100%, i.e from 30 to 29.97, it does frame blending. ALL IS FIXED :)

Jason, 29.97 is standard for NTSC televisions. It has nothing to do with progressive vs interlaced.
Normstock 3 Feb 2010 15:44
^ It does, 29.97fps is the standard for NTSC which is interlaced, 30fps is the progressive standard. The Canon 7D has a specification of shooting 30fps in 30p, the instruction book has an asterisk after 30p explaining playback is 29.97fps. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frame_rate

Then I should export as 30fps for my progressive or what? Why is everyone using neo scene to put it in a 29.97 form, then exporting as photo jpeg... More confused :-P

Scott, don't worry about what everyone else is doing.. for stock leave it alone at 30P. Don't interlace a progressive original. It's not necessary. NTSC only applies if it's going to air on TV. For that there are "pulldown" filters that the pros use. You can read a little bit more about it http://www.moviola.com/hd_ntsc_frame_rates

I am encoding progressive Photo-jpeg at 29.97 fps. No interlacing going on...
I know everyone using neoscene is outputting 29.97, then editing and exporting as 29.97.

"... shooting 30fps in 30p, the instruction book has an asterisk after 30p explaining playback is 29.97fps." Canon is very difficult to understand on the 5D MKII and 7D. They say it shoots 30p but then talks about captured video playing back at 29.97fps. I'm still not convinced that they capture true 30p or like the XH-A1 video camera it is a pseudo progressive. Without knowing what the true capture is it's hard to know like Scott is saying what the processed output fps should be. We are all in agreement that the processed footage should stay progressive. If the camera is capturing in 30p it should stay 30p; if it is really capturing (for playback) at 29.97 then it should stay in that fps reducing any ghosting or interpretation. Like Scott, now I'm confused.

hahaha. I am using CS3, and all I know is that I need to turn off frame blending at to export at 29.97fps , photo jpeg, or I will get ghosting :-P.

Eitherway, I think it is indifferent if you are doing 29.97 fps or 30fps, since it is still progressive and the frames can be stretched or sped up to get the fps, since there is no sound sync involved.

The reason they state that playback is at 29.97 is so that you can hook it up to your TV for previewing. See the Video Out Terminal
