GH4

Alright James, thank you. I think the stepping you mention is the same thing I see on my LCD. It's probably not something I should worry about, as the footage looks great on the computer screen.

I'm now viewing the 4K footage on my desktop with a trial version of CC. It looks very nice. However, in Windows 7 (64 bit) I don't get thumbnails for the 4K files. Not a huge deal now, but it will be later. Do any of you have similar issues with 4K files? And is there a 'quick fix' to it? Google didn't really help.

Hmm, you're right. I never really noticed that before. On my Mac, I see thumbnails on the movie files, but on my Win7 at work, I don't. Probably some codec issue on the Windows side that's preventing the OS from "peeking" into the file to grab a thumb. Not sure what the solution is. I'd be curious to see if someone can figure that out.

My boss' Nikon video clips also don't show thumbnails on my Windows machine, probably for the same reason.

I wonder if you shoot an MP4 as opposed to MOV, will it be different?

The Mac has a great "quick preview" function that I wish Windows would adopt: simply tapping the spacebar brings up a very quick preview of any file, including video. Hitting the spacebar again closes it. There's no need to actually launch the QuickTime player to see the video. Saves precious time when searching thru your raw clips.

You're probably right James, it seems to be a codec issue. I found a forum where people experienced something similar (although not with GH4 footage, but 4K .mov footage in general), and it was suggested to install a 'Microsoft Camera Codec Pack'. Did that, but it didn't change anything.

The thumbnail doesn't get displayed in both .mov and mp4.

I do have to buy a new laptop. But to buy a MacBook just so that it can display 4K thumbnails just seems wrong. That function you mention does sound interesting though.

The only thing I can suggest is render another FHD of the film, so you can have thumbnail of it.
I can't see 4K thumbnail in my Win 7, but have a FHD version as an alternative.

That's a usable workaround, although somewhat cumbersome. I don't like extra work when it's not necessary, and a thumbnail seems like such a simple thing to create. Who should we blame, Apple or MS?!

Good question. I wonder if Apple is limiting QT on the PC in this area.

BTW, https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/280996/thumbs.jpg when browsing my raw on my Mac. Not to rub it in or anything...

Thanks James, what a wonderful machine that Mac of yours, haha... Someone suggested to install a K-Lite codec pack. I will give that a go when I'm on my home computer and see how that goes.

On a sidenote, still having doubts about whether to keep the GH4 or go with the AX100 after all... Many pros and cons for both cameras.

I get the thumbnails on my MacBook Pro too and for what I paid for it, I deserve that ; ) I'm still considering the AX100 to replace my Panasonic X920 but keep the GH4, only thing stopping me, is 4K really worth the continued investment at the moment not only in more hardware but the workflow and uploading, I will keep the GH4.

On a side note I just got the DJI Phantom Vision 2 Plus and what a great all in one package this is, too much fun but it is an investment in footage?? The footage is unbelievably stable, no extra software needed to smooth out the shots.

DJI Phantom Vision 2 Plus! It is quite a big investment. They should put out 4K soon in order to compete with GoPro.
