IMO I think camera producer can producing compact camera with DSLR quality, but not doing so as they can still fool customers that DSLR is much better than compact. So people still buying expensive lenses which their aperture can't much anything good.
You see, my LX7 have F1.7-2.2 (24mm to 110mm), why they can't put this to DSLR lenses? Big puzzle! Of course this is money, business strategy play a big roll. In the other case they will close their shop and no one keep buying new lenses!
And many amateur still believe they can make a professional/good-quality picture by buying a DSLR. At the end they carrying lot of gears and forget about the person behind the camera is the most important factor of good picture. :D

Yes, very much true. I don't know why they have to crop so much for 4K. It has something to do with the sensor size of this camera, but don't most cameras crop 4K? This one is pretty big though, and for me that doesn't work (an adapter would distort the image on the edges?).
Well, interesting if they do have two different development teams working on these two projects. They must be working in close cooperation though, as this camera has copied several features from the GH4.
I have now spent more than double the money on the GH4 body and kit lense than this entire camera costs. And I probably also 'have' to pick up another lense (the 12-35mm seems like the best overall lense). That makes the GH4 package nearly 4 times as expensive as this. I wonder if there is a noticeable difference in 4K image quality in the end. There better be...

Stef,
I agreed. I have doubt Panasonic has 2 team to develop FZ1000 and GH4? I would say they have different designers and a Chief designer to decided what (chip, functions) to put into which camera.
I need to invest upto €3,500 for GH4 body, 2 lenses, and FZ1000 is just a quarter of the total price with lense restriction (25-400mm).

It all boils down to how good is the built-in lense and how good is the 4k footage. I am still incline for the GH4 because of the high FHD bitrate. If and only if the 4k footage looks as good as the GH4 and the Sony AX100, I would be very tempted to buy it. Not having a touch screen is no issue for me.

Yes, the price difference is big, but relatively only. A few months ago we were all excited about the GH4 and Sony AX100 'finally' bringing affordable 4K to us all. Now we think they are expensive choices!

I doubt the lense will be on par with some of their prime lenses. Paying more for one 12-35mm lense than an entire camera with a 25-200 range just doesn't make sense.

Touch screen is secondary..
Main thing is wide angle only upto 37mm in video shooting. That is a Hinderness.
Stef,
You can't compare that with prime lense, it is ZOOM, impressive Power Zoom 25-400mm, 37-400mm in video.

Yes, the crop to 37mm makes it not very usable, for me at least.

Yep, they look pretty nice, no issues with cropping there it seems. But there will be plenty situations where you'll crave to have a wider lense.
