I'm kinda leaning towards AX-100 to save on new lenses until the 4K market stabilizes and matures a little more. $2k is worth a temporary start. Sure hopes it's better and less noise that the much more expensive Z-100 was. Can't find a good comparison between AX-100 and Z-100.

That's what I'm thinking too Don. The fact that there are quite a few comparisons out there with (semi) pro cameras like the GH4 and the BMC is promising for the AX100.

So ... someone try to talk me out of the AX-100. For general stock shooting, run and gun, all inclusive camera and lens I just don't see too many negatives for the price. Bit data rate is slower but for general stock I'm not sure it will be noticeable or a detractor. It also is UHD instead of DCI 4K. Problem is downsizing from DCI 4K to HD is not same proportion size and either top or bottom will be cut off. I see that as a problem in agencies like SS where auto downsizing is accomplished. Their downsized DCI 4K HD is not 16:9 proportion but a completely non-standard HD size.
I did not like the noise and grain on the Z-100 but this is a completely different and larger sensor. Has anyone shot the AX-100 yet?
The BMC 4K just doesn't make it due to poor lcd screen, limited controls and just all around problems. The GH4 really needs the Shogun recorder that won't be available until fall to get full DCI 4K. So GH4 and AX-100 both shoot UHD at 30 fps which I think will become the standard due to it's proportion with HD.
Some one give me some real and true detractors on the AX-100 and save me some money ;)

I should have some first hand info for you in a few days, Don. Wish me luck.
Edit - well, maybe I'll have it Monday afternoon.... funny 2-day UPS doesn't work so fast going to Alaska.

Don, I think going from DCI to UHD you lose left to right pixels, not top and bottom. So it would be simply to crop and get to UHD. Even the downsized ones are the same.
I think James has the AX100 and has said he doesn't have the noise in the blue issues like we saw with the z100.
for stock I'd get the gh4 if you are wanting 4k. If you want run and gun 4k, and not sure why you would (weddings? in 4k? :-P) then the ax100 might be a good option

yes, you do :-P
I was also looking at the ax100 as a travel cam, or the gh4. still haven't decided.
I was thinking you mean the ax1 don.

Well no one talked me out of it so I just picked up my new Sony FDR AX100 4K oooppps UHD camera and the battery is charging. So much smaller than the Z-100 so for size and weight it looks like a good travel camera. First test tomorrow.
