I am interested in using some of the clips here that are PAL, but I am working in an NTSC format and don't really understand how I can get a PAL clip into my NTSC timeline in Final Cut Pro 5 and being able to compress and export it.
Anyone got a good explanation on how to do this one?

Try downloading MPEG Streamclip (it's free). You can do conversions in there. I believe their Help section has instructions how to do it. Also, if you have the Nattress filters in FCP, I think there's a conversion tool in there.
If you have After Effects, Andrew Kramer has a frame converter preset and a conversion tutorial.
