Pixel aspect ratio

Hello, I use a canon XL2 and vegas editing software. When I shoot something in 16:9 it uploads to vegas as 720x480 with a pixel aspect ratio of 1.212 which makes it widescreen.
When I try to render it in vegas as a Mjpeg .mov file and play it in quicktime it always freezes and plays as 1:1 pixels so its not widescreen.
So I use a program called Mpeg streamclip to convert the .avi files to mjpeg, but there is still no chance for me to use 1.212 pixel ratio.
So should I choose 854x480 to render it in widescreen? Or is there some other program I should be using?
Also is my footage anamorphic 16:9 or native? Any help is apreciated.

Check the software when importing... it might be set to a weird preset option.
not sure what the xl2 imports at... so check the instructions.

On vegas set up your project settings correctly first. Go to File -> Properties -> Video (Tab) - Template (pulldown) - then also on a any clip check to make sure that the individual clip is also setup correctly by right clicking on the clip on the timeline and again going to properties and make sure that the "maintain ASpect Ratio" box is checked.

In Mpeg Streamclip you also have the possiblity to export as mov, choose DV / DVCPRO-NTSC codec (optimum quality), then options: aspect ratio 16:9 and leave the clip at 720x480. This should encode the correct PAR for the 16:9 clip. They are anamorphic.
Good luck,
Stefan
