ProRes or Mov/PhotoJpeg?

Let's try to put this thread on track. I did some web browsing. These values are for productions but must also apply to b-roll included in that production.

THIS IS WHAT BBC WANTS:

3840 x 2160 pixels in an aspect ratio of 16:9
50 or 25 frames per second progressive known as 2160p/50 or 2160p/25 - sampled at a ratio of 4:2:0 or 4:2:2

THIS IS WHAT NETFLIX WANTS:

Resolution: Minimum of 3840
Codec: Lightly Compressed or Uncompressed RAW or Intraframe Based Codec with 4:2:2
Bit Depth: 10-Bit or Greater
Data Rate: Minimum 240Mbps at 24FPS

For my Panasonic Lumix they want: 4K: 4096x2160 - 422 All-I 400Mb/s

According to this, ProRes is the way to go in 2023 .... but .... Can 25FPS clips be converted easily to 24FPS ??? ... so that if you shoot at BBC's 25FPS you also comply with Netflix 24 FPS requirement ???

"Of course content is king. " You are right.

Well, according to that list, if you are shooting All-I 400Mb/s and then you render it to 8 bit 4:2:0 you are technically "not doing it right", but, if you have content uploaded and the buyer REALLY wants the camera-original files, then they will contact you or P5. You basically have to accept that you can't please everyone at once. The happy medium? Render to a true intermediate codec, something well-known and at the top of the list, and be done with it. (so yeah, ProRes 422 or HQ, or DNxHR) Render it to the same frame rate you shot it in. You don't shoot landscapes at 50/60p, do you? If so, why???? 48,50 or 60 are better-suited for action shots. Even better, 120.

I've only worked directly on one BBC-related project, and they had me shooting at 29.97. Go figure. (Our Planet). Ironically when they sent me the DVD I can't play it, (I"m in Region 1) so it wasn't because it was made for a US audience.

If they need to, those who do care will have the proper procedure to convert without lost or duplicated frames, or out-of-sync audio (when applicable). Those who don't are likely web-based, and as such, it doesn't matter (as much).

Love your suggestion, PCDMedia. It would be useful info indeed.
