Any free avchd to mov converter?

I bought a Sony camera and the video out is in avchd format.
Any recommendation on software (free) to convert avchd to mov?

I use Vegas Movie Studio HD 11.0 and then run it through MPEG Stremaclip (free). That Sony version is only about $40. You can check it out for free by downloading a trial version...in fact, when your trial period runs out, you can try another version of Sony Vegas and then another, so you could get almost 2 months free.

Although not the easiest thing to use, ffmpeg (http://www.ffmpeg.org/) is a free command line program that can convert or re-wrap a large variety of formats. Although I've never used if for AVCHD files I do use it at work frequently. If you do a Google search for 'ffmpeg avchd' there are lots of articles to help.

if your on a mac and have newer Imovie it converts them to mov when you import them

i tried numeroous conversion programs and almost all of them render in very low quality. best to use something like sony vegas, but that itself has a steep learning curve to figure out which codecs to use, and which settings to use.
