I named it Notting Hill (because I like the movie - makes me cry every time) in my ignorance. Do you know where this is? Thanks for the help in advance! Terry

I don't think it's Notting Hill. My immediate thought was Soho, Covent Garden or the area North of Oxford Street, though from a quick look at StreetView, it's not Old Compton Street, which was my first guess.
I'm sure someone will recognise the distinctive building at the end of the street.
Good luck.

Terry,
Are you sure it's London? On the original can you see what is printed in the white panel below the no parking sign as it passes on the right hand side? The shape of the words don't look like "No waiting", "No parking", etc. Also, if this was London in the '70s no waiting would be designated by yellow lines painted in the gutter.
Also, it looks like it's been shot from the right hand side of the vehicle. Could have been the driver holding the camera, of course, as the rules about being in control of a vehicle were a lot less stringent then.
Paul.

I'm not from London either, but I've been looking at the shops and I've been trying to figure out something, but with no results...
I have to say that it's a very nice "game" all this trying to understand where is this street... We should do it more often!! :-)

Thanks for all the effort! I am pretty sure it's London, as it comes off the same reel as a bunch of other iconic London places. The filmmaker was an Australian named Len Moncur, who traveled the world with his wife from the 70s onwards creating home movies (with soundtrack!). Hundreds of his very skillfully created 8mm and Super 8mm work I rescued from a public dumpsite. He is shooting from the top floor of a double decker tour bus. I think we have located it! 100-102 Judd Street

Nice find tbmp! All this old 8mm, Super 8mm and 16mm footage is slowly deteriorating. Unless someone saves this stuff, all these great memories are gone forever. I bought some cool vintage films awhile back, but it seems like its so expensive to have put on a hard drive that its just been sitting there.

You've found a Java Tree Cafe, but there's no way that's Judd Street in the 70's. Here's a picture from Street View: http://tinypic.com/r/v4yp75/8
The viewpoint is too low to be shot from the top deck of a tour bus, so Len's standing alongside the driver. Which means it's a left hand drive bus. That and the no waiting sign with the curved pole that doesn't look like any I would have seen as a teenager living in London during the 70's makes me think it's continental Europe.
Maybe we ought to get the people who analysed the Zapruder footage on the case :)
The Java Tree themselves might be able to help: info@javatreecafe.com They might know if the cafe was in a shopping street in the '70s or whether it's a coincidence that two cafes have the same name some 40+ years apart.

Gitifinger, OK. Objection noted. But HOW DO YOU EXPLAIN the Kami Japanese restaurant passing by on the right? Also, if you look at the parked cars on the left you'll see a parked Rover and a Morris. The theory of the lone assassin debunked!
Since these kinda problems are deep, I purchased both Super 8 and 8mm sound projectors for the narration, on the vast collection of other reels.
