Hello,
I am going to travel the deserts of Asia. The weight of my luggage is limited. The hard disk of my camcorder has a capacity of 120. I want to download the clips from the camcorder to external hard disk without using a computer. Any idea on specific gadgets? I would appreciated detailed answers (model name, maker etc.). Please be aware that many public computer owners disable their USB ports. I could not find even one public (Internet cafe) computer in Brazil or Argentina with working USB. Carrying with me a laptop will add at least 1.5 Kg to my weight, which is a lot. Thanks, Eden.

I have been using the Wolverine FlashPac 7120 for my still photography. It is a portable hard drive, completely stand alone, rechargable battery.
Mine is the 7120 with 120gb it has capability of plugging in 5 different types of storage cards and it has a mini usb. I bought it from Costco it was very cheap and I have used it on location when traveling.

OK, I looked at their web site and noticed: 320GB also available, however very expensive. Also, it will not download from the hard disk of the camera.

They have usb 2 and firewire.................$109.00 for 160gb doesn't seem expensive for a stand alone rechargable battery unit.

Norman,
I guess it will let you download video from the card?
Looks like a good thing to bring with you on a trip.

Norman,
I think the USB and FireWire are for DLing the files back to a computer only. When you think video, an Extreme card of 16 or 32 GB should be added to the price.
Assuming I shoot only 1 hour a day, that's 11 GB per day or 660 GB for two months. Too expensive.
