Keeping full quality?

I recently had success uploading my first clip in the h264 codec but was told I might want to consider uploading in the original HDV codec so that it remains full quality.
How does one maintain the original codec? When I import using iMovie 8 or Quicktime Pro, it turns my file into the Apple Intermediate codec.
What must I do to get it to remain in the original HDV codec?
I shoot with a Canon XH-A1 and am admittedly not too sharp on getting the codec thing right.
Can anyone offer any suggestions? Thanks!
